Diastasis Recti Awareness – Role of Fascia in Treatment of the Abdominal Separation

Diastasis Recti treatment and recovery

Discover the latest research and proven strategies for treatment of Diastasis Recti Abdominus.

DRA is the separation of the abdominal muscle that is often seen in postpartum clients. In the past decade there has been an increase in this condition throughout all populations. As a Pilates teacher chances are you will see a client with this condition more frequently.

July is the Diastasis Recti Awareness Month

I am very passionate about spreading awareness about this condition because I personally have spent years trying to recover. I was fortunate enough to learn about the condition soon after my first set of twins were born and I was able to start my road to recovery. It was not easy but at least I knew what NOT to do and what to focus on to ease my frustration.

However, many clients that I have worked with are not as lucky as I was.

I see women in their 60 and 70s (way out of the postpartum period) who have DRA (separation of the abdominal muscle) and have never been diagnosed. They were dealing with symptoms of this condition for decades without ever addressing the real problem.

I see postpartum women who have been obsessed with crunches and HIIT workouts to get rid of the “mommy tummy” but all they have gained was lower back pain. They were never told that those crunches were only making their condition worse. I see extremely fit women who had “abs of steel” before pregnancy but struggle to regain their core strength postpartum (hey, I AM one of these women.)
