Give a gift of care and support to someone who really needs it. This year PilatesBridge is partnering up with Kids Alive International, a Christian organization that helps children who’ve been abused or are in need all over the world. My friend Betsy Baker serves as a missionary of KAI in Guatemala and I would love to support her efforts there.
This year we are featuring the first Raffle Giveaway Do Pilates – Help Kids. 100% of all proceeds will go to support Betsy and bring Christmas to the girls that she works with. Betsy works with the girls who have been sexually or physically abused. They definitely deserve some Christmas cheer!
As Pilates teachers and students we know how to take care of our bodies but the girls that we want to help have been abused. Their bodies are a source of pain and shame. They need people around them who can teach them how to love themselves and how to feel loved. I hope that one day PilatesBridge will be able to bring the healing powers of Pilates to these girls but today let’s just show them that somebody cares about them. Are you with me?
I’ve asked Betsy to share a little bit of what she does in Guatemala and how she changes lives of the girls there.
I work at a home for girls who have been physically and sexually abused. They range from ages 5 – 17, with the majority of the girls being in the 9-11 age range. Each girl that comes to us comes either from a different government home where they’ve been “protected” for some time, or they come directly from the abusive situation. Our ministry works not only to keep the girls safe from their abuser, but to also share the Gospel with them, and teach them what kind of young women they are in Christ. We also work with the government judicial system to have their abusers imprisoned, and help the families to get on their feet financially so they’re able to run a home in a stable manner.
As I’ve been here for the past year, I’ve seen girls come and go. They sometimes go back to their families, and sometimes they stay with us until they’re 18. As they enter our program, they are scared, nervous, and sometimes don’t speak.
One girl entered my classroom on her second day here with an angered face, hardened heart, and zero desire to be loved, or to love others. I watched in three months as her heart slowly softened. She slowly learned to cry at sad things, give hugs when others needed them, receive hugs when SHE needed them. Now, 5 months later, she is the kindest hearted, most loving, and full of laughter girl I have ever met.
In Pilates we learn to work from the core and engage it in our daily activities. While it is important to work from our physical core it is even more important to work from our spiritual core.
